VoiceOver is the first screen reader to provide plug-and-play support for refreshable braille displays. Plug in or sync one of over 100 compatible displays, and the VoiceOver description is presented to you in braille. Software called a “screen reader” is needed to translate visual information verbally, so we can make sense of what is on screen. Unfortunately many screen readers cost thousands of dollars — often more than the computer itself. This holds millions of people back from affording to use a computer and discovering their potential. Mac OS X Snow Leopard VoiceOver is a built-in screen reader for Mac OS X. VoiceOver will benefit users who are blind or low-vision to use a computer. The latest version of VoiceOver includes gesture support, braille display mirroring, and spoken hints, and many new web page support options. Turning On VoiceOver VoiceOver may be turned on by pressing pressing Command + F5. VoiceOver may also be turned on in the Universal Access panel of System Preferences: • Chose Apple menu > System Preferences, and click Universal Access. (Alternatively, click on the System Preferences icon in the dock.) • Click on the Seeing tab. • Check the radio button labeled On in the VoiceOver section (Figure 1). • If desired, click on the Open VoiceOver Utility. How To Know That VoiceOver is Working By default, OS X will display an overlay window in the lower-left corner of the screen with the text indicating that VoiceOver is running (Figure 3). Using a keyboard to navigate within webpages Your Firefox Options Preferences in the General panel, Browsing section include the setting Always use the cursor keys to navigate within webpages which allows you to move through web content as if you were inside a read-only editor. You can use the keyboard to select web content and copy it to the clipboard. You can press F7 at any time to turn this feature on or off. When you press F7, Firefox will ask if you really want to turn on this feature. You can disable this prompt by selecting Do not show this dialog again. Search for text when you start to type Your Firefox Options Preferences in the General panel, Browsing section include the setting Search for text when I you start typing. This allows you to quickly navigate to text or hyperlinks in a web page. This feature has two modes. Press / and start typing to search all text on the current page, or press ' before your string to search hyperlinks only. Firefox will highlight matching text or hyperlinks as you type. The following keyboard shortcuts control this feature: • Type more characters to narrow your search. Firefox will highlight the next matching hyperlink or text or alert you that nothing matched. ![]() • Press Ctrl command+ G or F3 to find the next occurrence of your current search string. • Press Ctrl command+ Shift+ G or Shift+ F3 to find the previous occurrence of your current search string. • Press Backspace to undo the last character you typed. Firefox will back up to the previously highlighted text. • Press Esc to cancel a search. Screen Reader Shortcut MacYou can also cancel a search by changing focus, or simply waiting for the timeout. If this option is checked, you can start typing at any time to auto-start a search on the current page. By default auto-started searches look for all text on the page. You can still explicitly press ' or / to start finding in one mode or the other. You can use this feature to get to buttons, text boxes and other form controls. Search for the text immediately before the form control you want and press Tab.
